8.1 Overview

This section described the installation and operation of the optional redundant 1:1 and 1:2 switch
assemblies. This R series redundant switch has been specifically designed and built to integrate
with rack-mount Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs) Model S5CI using an external switch
controller board.

8.2 Equipment Description

The 1:1 switch assembly P/N 01036171 consists of a waveguide switch, a RF Load and four
waveguides that are connected to the output flange of the amplifiers. Mounting brackets are
available for supporting the RF load and the waveguide switch above the amplifiers as well as
toward the rear of the cabinet. The RF input is one of these three configurations: two direct inputs,
splitter-inputs and ganged inputs. The RF input configuration is an option, which is defined by
the user when the equipment is placed on order. The RF block diagram for each of these inputs is
shown in drawing 01036173.
The Switch Interface Module (SIM) controller P/N 01042670 has a pig-tailed cable, which is
connected to the waveguide switch for control and monitor functions. This SIM board is serially
linked to the amplifiers through the CAN-bus and receives the +28VDC from either amplifier
through ribbon cables P/N 01039926. The SIM board has a microprocessor controller that detects
the amplifier's auto/manual mode, fault status, and decides when to rotate the waveguide switch
using onboard buffer-drivers. The SIM board monitors the waveguide switch(s) position and
relays the information to the amplifiers. Interconnection between the amplifier, the SIM controller,
and the waveguide switch is shown in drawing 01036175.

8.3 Equipment Set Up

The SSPA redundant switch system is set up in the factory to operate as a 1:1 or a 1:2 switch
system. If the SIM controller or the SSPA is replaced in the field the set up procedures below
should be verified to ensure proper switch system operation.
8.3.1

SIM Controller Setup

1. Locate the dipswitch SW1 on the SIM controller board.
2. Verify that SW1-position 5 is set to the ON position for both 1:1 and 1:2 systems.
3. Verify that SW1 positions 1 to 4 are to the OFF position for 1:1 switch and yet to be
determined for 1:2 switch.
