VoIP – Voice over IP (Software option # 70 19180 030)
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of
voice communications over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. VoIP systems
employ session control and signalling protocols to control the signalling, set-up, and tear-down of
calls. They transport audio streams over IP networks using special media delivery protocols that
encode audio with audio codecs as Digital audio by streaming media. Various codecs exist that
optimize the media stream based on application requirements and network bandwidth; some
implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity
codecs.
In order that the Nagra
can make a VoIP communication to another device, the VoIP option
Seven
must be installed on the machine. Then several different communication methods, using various
procedures and protocols are possible, all the different parameters allowing VoIP communication to
be established can be set in the TRANSMISSION section of the menus. Select VoIP mode and then
click on settings (explained on the following pages).
There are two principal methods for the Nagra
to make the connection, which will be outlined
Seven
step-by-step to give an overall understanding of the procedures.
To set-up a connection, a SIP server is used. The machines register themselves on this server with a
unique address known as the SIP address which is similar to an e-mail address (e.g.
Nagra@sipserver.com). Each device is thus known by the server which allows others to locate it by
contacting the SIP server using the SIP protocol, and to subsequently set-up an audio connection
between the two parties.
