Checking the crankpin oil clearance

1. Clean the bearings and connecting rod.
2. Install the crankpin bearings 1 into the
connecting rod 2.

Install the bearings in their original posi-
tions.
Install the protrusion a of the bearing into

the groove on the connecting rod 2.
3. Put a piece of Plastigauge (PG-1) onto
the crankpin, parallel to the crankshaft.
TIP:
Do not put the Plastigauge (PG-1) over the
oil hole in the crankpin of the crankshaft.
4. Install the connecting rod to the crankpin.
TIP:
Align the alignment marks b on the con-

necting rod.
Face the alignment marks b toward the fly-

wheel magnet side of the crankshaft.

5. Tighten the connecting rod bolts 3 to the
specified torques in 2 stages.

Connecting rod bolt 3:
1st: 6 N·m (0.6 kgf·m, 4.4 ft·lb)
2nd: 17 N·m (1.7 kgf·m, 12.5 ft·lb)
TIP:
Do not turn the connecting rod until the
crankpin oil clearance measurement has
been completed.
6. Remove the connecting rod cap and
measure the width of the compressed
Plastigauge (PG-1) on each crankpin.
Replace the crankpin bearing if out of
specification.
Crankpin oil clearance:
0.016–0.040 mm (0.0006–0.0015 in)
