Types of Interfaces

There are three types of interfaces in VioNet devices:
Physical or generic interface.
Virtual interface.
Subinterfaces.
NOTE: The interfaces can only be created or modified in a non-dynamic configuration so, in order to
activate them the configuration must be saved and the router rebooted.
8.1.1
Physical or Generic Interface
The physical or generic interface is a type of interface assigned to a specific connector/interface on the
device and cannot go over other type of interface or connector.

Virtual Interface
This is an interface that can run over a connector, generic interfaces or over the router itself.
8.1.2.1
Creating a Virtual Interface
To create this type of interface, you need to enter the add device <interface>
<identifier>command from the general configuration menu. E.g.:
Config>add device ppp 1

Deleting a Virtual Interface
To delete an existing virtual interface, use the no device <interface> command from the general
configuration menu.
Config>no device <interface_name>
Config>no device ppp1

Subinterfaces
These are interfaces that are found within a generic interface.
8.1.3.1
Creating a Subinterface
To create this type of interface, you need to enter the subinterface <interface>
<identifier>command from the general configuration menu. E.g.:
Config>add device eth-subinterface 1
You can check that the created interface has been correctly added by listing all the interfaces in the
device:

Deleting a SubInterface
To delete an existing subinterface, use the no device <interface> command from the general
configuration menu.
Config>no device <interface_name>
8.2

Checking the Status of the Interfaces

To check that an interface is attached in the router, execute the CONFIGURATION command from the main
monitoring menu. This will show us if the interface has been created and what state it is in.
