facility
The equipment constituting a
telecommunications path
between the communications
system and the central office
(CO).
factory setting
The default state of a device
or feature if the user does not
choose an optional setting.
fax (facsimile)
A processor the result of a
process in which graphic
material is scanned and the
information converted into
electrical signal waves to
produce an exact likeness.
feature
A function or service
provided by a hardware or
software product.
feature code
A code entered on a dialpad
to activate a feature. For
example, a user might press
the feature button or might
dial #33.
Feature screen
A display screen on
digital/lSDN display
telephones that provides
quick access to commonly
used features.
foil shield
A copper foil sheet for power
units on expansion carriers
that is used to prevent
excessive noise on the
module immediately to the
right of the power supply
module in each expansion
carrier.
frame
One of several segments of
an analog or digital signal
that has a repetitive
characteristic. For example, a
DS1 frame consists of a
framing bit and 24 octets,
which equals 193 bits.
frequency generator
A circuit pack added to the
power unit module that
generates a high-voltage,
20-30-Hz signal to ring a
telephone. Also called a ring
generator.
FX (foreign exchange)
A central office (CO) other
than the one providing local
access to the public network.
