Troubleshooting
Most frequently encountered problems associated with the STU Ill/
SECTEL are a result of either faulty cord connections (power line,
handset, telephone line, or power converter), or errors made while
using features incorporated in the terminal.
This chapter will help identify and correct minor hardware
malfunctions and interpret display messages associated with
equipment failure, telephone line problems, invalid CIKs (Crypto
Ignition Keys), and improper use of selected features.
The most common hardware malfunctions associated with the
STU 111/SECTEL produce the following symptoms:
• Blank Message Display (loss of input power)
• No Dial Tone
• Poor Quality Sound or Inability To Place Call
Perform the following troubleshooting steps in the order given to
determine if the terminal is operating properly, or if the problem is
caused by external equipment or services.
Blank Message Display (loss of input power)
The most probable cause of a blank message display is a loss of
input power. The Motorola STU 111/SECTEL has the unique
capability of functioning as a plain old telephone (POT), in clear
mode only, during a loss of input power. To use the
STU 111/SECTEL during a loss of input power, press

each call placed.

Ensure the Message Display Contrast Adjustment knob is in
the proper position. See Chapter 2, Controls and Indicators
for more information.

Check power line cord connections. Ensure that the
connections at the ac receptacle and the power converter are
made properly.
