Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum. The radio modulation technique used by
the BayStack 650 Wireless LAN products. The original data stream is
multiplied by a spreading factor or "chipping" code, breaking down each data
bit into multiple sub-bits or chips and then transmitting and reassembling
those chips over a frequency range much broader than the normal range of the
data stream.
See IEEE address.
Extended Service Area. The wireless coverage within an area covered by
devices with the same SSID. The extended service area consists of the
combined basic service area of each BayStack 650 Access Point. A user with
a mobile unit can roam within the extended service area and maintain an
uninterrupted connection to the LAN.
Frequency hopping spread spectrum.
The pre-set order in which frequency hopping radio transmissions from a
BayStack PC card are distributed over 78 channels of the assigned
transmission band. All stations communicating with the same BayStack
access point use the same hop sequence and synchronize their hop timing.
When interference is present, it only affects a few hops. Hop sequences are
designed so that successive hops are usually several megahertz apart.
A unique hardware address assigned through the IEEE to each and every
device that can be attached to an Ethernet network. This address consists of
six hexadecimal numbers, sometimes separated by spaces or dashes, for
example, 00-34-2C-1D-69-F1. It is sometimes referred to as the hardware,
network, or Ethernet address or MAC address.
A standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
that defines the requirements for implementation of wireless LANs.
A network consisting of two or more BayStack workstations and one or more
BayStack 650 Access Points. The wireless connection is through an access
point that is wired into the existing cabled network. An infrastructure network
requires peer-to-peer network software such as Windows 95, Windows 98, or
Windows NT or a server-based network such as Novell NetWare. See also ad
hoc network, peer-to-peer network, server-based network, and infrastructure
