13.5 Minimum Configuration Troubleshooting With the

System LED

The most effective way to use the system LED to troubleshoot is to strip the
unit to its bare essentials. Such a minimal system consists of the CPU module,
base module, and the power supply.
To reduce the unit to a minimum configuration, disconnect all cables in the
rear of the system. Then attach the Ethernet loopback connector (Part #12-
22196-02) and the SCSI terminator (Part #12-29635-01). Then remove all
TURBOchannel options that may be installed as well as all memory modules.
You can then run the power-up self-test and interpret the flashing system LED
to isolate and correct problems with this core system.
The keyboard and video sub-system can then be reinstalled. If necessary the
power-up self-test can again be used to isolate and correct problems with the
video.
Once the video is re-established, the remaining components can be reinstalled
one at a time. If a problem occurs at this point, the error messages displayed
on the screen can be used to resolve the problem.
More experienced users may not need to strip the system down to a minimum
configuration. However, troubleshooting a fully configured workstation with
the system LED generally requires a significant amount of knowledge of
system operation.
