SnapServer GuardianOS 7.2 Administrator's Guide
Storage Pools
If you chose the DynamicRAID option during the initial setup of your SnapServer, the
wizard creates a separate storage pool on the head unit and on each attached expansion unit.
When you navigate to Storage > Storage Pools, an overview of the configured storage pool is
shown.
IMPORTANT: A SnapServer head unit or expansion unit supports only one storage pool created
from its drives and contained within that enclosure. Multiple volumes can be created on that
storage pool.
All disk drives in a chassis (head unit or expansion unit) are part of a single storage pool. If
disk drives are added to fill empty slots, they become part of the same storage pool. If a new
expansion unit is added, a new storage pool is created on it.
Disk drives that have been previously configured can be added to a head or expansion unit
and to a chassis and incorporated into its storage pool. These drives are indicated in the list
by the
system. This includes a drive that has any kind of storage configuration on it (from any
machine, including the current one) that is not recognized by the server.
Examples include a drive that was installed, a drive that was removed, a drive that was in
the server and then added to a RAID, or a drive was part of a RAID that was deleted. This
applies to drives that are current RAID members and may have been removed inadvertently.
Upon re-insertion, they will not be automatically incorporated, regardless of whether
automatic incorporation of unassigned drives is turned on.
Storage Pool Creation
During the setup process, storage pools are created on the SnapServer using all disk drives
available on the head unit and all attached expansion units. DynamicRAID always
maximizes the space available based on the type of parity mode and size requested for the
snapshot pool. Should it become necessary to create a new storage pool, click the link in the
Status column of the Storage Pool table to open the Create Storage Pool page.
NOTE: You can create storage pools on the head and expansion units with each pool completely

icon and a message stating that the disk has previously been used in a different
contained within the unit, one storage pool per unit. When a storage pool is created and a
disk in the storage pool has previously been used in a different system, it will be
reformatted and all data on the disk will be deleted.
The first detected drive is used as the basis for the drive-size characteristics of the storage
pool. All other drives in the storage pool must conform to the first drive's size
characteristics. Otherwise, they are not used. See
details.
