OPTIMOD-FM DIGITAL
Both the Two-Band and Five-Band multiband compressors always operate in the
background. So switching between Two-Band and Five-Band occurs with a seamless
cross-fade. Unlike older Orban processors like the 8200, no DSP code is reloaded and
no audio mute is necessary.
Maximum-Performance Five Band (MX) presets are new with version 2.0 soft-
ware. They use the Normal 5-Band structure, exploiting version 2.0's compressor
look-ahead processing and M
ness/distortion tradeoff than the original 8300 version 1 presets, which also use the
Normal 5-Band structure. Version 1 presets retain their existing performance and are
identified by having neither "UL" nor "MX" at the end of their names. If you are
presently using an original version 1 factory preset on-air, you can usually increase
your competitiveness by switching to an "MX" preset. The only downside is that
they have 5 ms more latency than non-MX optimum 5-band presets.
Ultra-Low-Latency Five-Band (UL) reduces the input-to-output delay of the proc-
essor to about 5 ms at the cost of a less favorable tradeoff between loudness,
brightness, and distortion than the other presets. It is comparable in performance to
Optimod-FM 8200 version 3.0 except that the clippers are anti-aliased and it offers
the same stereo enhancement, equalization section, advanced-technology AGC,
composite limiter, and multiplex power controller as the other 8300 structures. Ul-
tra-Low-Latency presets have "UL" at the end of their names.
UL Presets do not support full HD processing. If you are using the 8300's
HD output with a UL preset, the HD output will emit the de-emphasized,
FM-processed signal. Because HD Radio requires an eight second diversity
delay in the analog channel, we do not expect that UL presets would be
useful in HD operation.
If you like the audio texture of UL presets and want to achieve this tex-
ture in HD operation, you can closely approximate it by recalling a nor-
mal five-band preset (not an MX preset) and setting M

trols very carefully to prevent distortion with critical program material—
spend some time listening with different sources! For equal amounts of
distortion, this mode of operation can safely achieve about 2.5 dB lower
loudness than an MX preset.
The Normal Five-Band (i.e., the structure that supports non-"UL" 5-band presets)
and the Two-Band structures can be switched via a mute-free crossfade (because
they are both active simultaneously); the Ultra-Low Latency Five-Band structure
causes a very brief audio mute when activated (because DSP code must be re-
loaded).
To put a given structure on the air, recall a factory or user preset associated with
that structure.
