H.323
A carrier-grade communication protocol that has been approved by the world
governments as the international standard for voice, video, and data conferenc-
ing. It defines an entire, unified system for performing these functions and
leverages the strengths of the IETF and ITU-T protocols.
Hub
A device for connecting one or more computers to other computers, networked
devices, or to other networks. Compared to routers and switches (which are also
connecting types of devices), a hub is the least complicated way to get the job
done. Hubs work at the physical layer (layer 1) of the OSI model. All computers
on the hub are able to see everything all the other computers on the hub see. Also

IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)
A body organized by the Internet Society (ISOC) that defines standard Internet
operating protocols. Its mission is to produce high-quality, relevant technical
documents, known as Requests for Comments (RFC), that influence the way
people design, use, and manage the Internet. The IETF is supervised by the
ISOC's Internet Architecture Board (IAB), and its members are drawn from
ISOC's individual and organization membership. See also "ISOC."
IP-PBx (Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange)
A telephone switch (see "PBX") located on a customer's premises that utilize VoIP
to manage and deliver calls.
IPv4
A revision of Internet Protocol that uses 32 bit addressing. See also "IPv6."
IPv6
A network packet routing protocol that uses 128 bit addressing. IPv6 was devel-
oped to address the shortcomings of IPv4, such as the 32 bit address that limited
the maximum number of devices that could be addressed and to extend the capa-
bilities of IP to meet future QoS capabilities. IPv6 addresses have 8 hexadecimal
numbers, separated by colons (e.g.,
BC:BA43
).
