Cleaning

Most print-quality and paper feed problems are caused by damaged or unsupported media. If the
media is OK, cleaning is often the next step in the troubleshooting process. This section presents
examples of the most common print-quality problems and related cleaning procedures. Always
use the embedded Troubleshooting Print Quality Page to determine if cleaning is required.
Cleaning instructions are located in the knowledge base, the Phaser 8400
Reference Guide, and the Phaser 8500/8550 User Guide.

Eliminate Light Stripes

The automated Printhead cleaning sequence should be used
when weak or missing jets cause print-quality problems, as
shown to the right. In this example, the Light Stripes Test
Print is missing several jets while the sample customer print
shows the affect of a single missing jet.
The most common way to restore weak or missing Printhead
jets is to run the automated "Eliminate Light Stripes"
cleaning procedure on Phaser 8400 printers. Phaser 8500 and
8550 printers have an Eliminate Light Stripes menu that
provides three choices for cleaning the Printhead.
Each missing jet generates a light vertical band that is approximately 4 mm
(1/6 inch) wide on printed images, because the jet is interlaced with several
other jets during the print process.
Phaser 8400 Printhead Cleaning
The Control Panel is used to begin the Printhead cleaning sequence, which takes about five minutes. For
Phaser 8400 printers, use the following procedure to select the "Eliminate Light Stripes" cleaning sequence.
If a printer is available, locate the procedure on the Control Panel but do
want to clean the Printhead.
1. Select Troubleshooting and press OK.
2. Scroll to Print Quality Problems and press OK.
3. Locate the Eliminate Light Stripes selection in the menu. Do
