General Techniques

Observe the following techniques for clearing jams regardless of the location within the printer:
Never use sharp or metal objects - sensitive components such as the Drum and Transfix Roller
can be scratched, causing permanent print-quality defects.
Verify the media is supported - if possible, print the Paper Tips Page for a list of supported media
and guidelines for using the trays. You may also refer to the Reference Guide for supported paper
types and sizes.
Remove paper in the direction of travel - when possible, pull the paper in the direction it
normally travels through the paper path to avoid damaging internal components.
When the Control Panel displays a paper jam message on Phaser 8500 and
8550 printers, press Help to view the jam code.
Photographs in the following section show green parts for all customer
touch points such as the Paper Release Guide and Exit Guide. Green parts
are installed on Phaser 8400 printers while Phaser 8500 and 8550 printers
use white parts with green labels.

Function
This manual is located in the printer's documentation pocket and provides a list
of supported papers and visual instructions for clearing jams.
The menu Troubleshooting...Paper Jams provides the embedded Paper Tips
Page, online jam prevention tips, and a Paper Path Test for checking the
functionality of each tray.
The menu Troubleshooting...Service Tools provides access to the embedded
Printer Status Page, Jam History, and the Customer Diagnostics Mode.
If connected to a network via TCP/IP, PrintingScout displays a message on the
user's computer screen when paper jams and other problems occur. The
message includes a link to instructions for solving the problem.
Use PhaserSMART and the knowledge base to access online support.
Windows users can access the Phaser 8400 user documentation and videos for
clearing jams from the Internet using the menu path Start...Programs...Xerox
Office Printing. Loading the printer driver adds this item to the Start menu.
Phaser 8500 and 8550 users can access the User Guide and videos for
clearing jams from the Xerox Support Centre utility.
