Customer Environment

Technicians must always be careful to protect the customer's office environment, including the furniture and
carpets. When servicing these printers, the most likely ways to cause damage are scratches caused by sharp
edges and spilling liquid ink.
To protect the customer's office furniture, use a cloth to cover your work area.
Handle the Printhead and Ink Loader Assemblies carefully to avoid ink spills.
Scratches
Sharp edges on tools and printer components can scratch finished surfaces such as table tops and desks.
Damage can occur when components such as the Electronics Module, Printhead, Preheater, and grounding
clips are removed and placed directly onto furniture. If the printer is located on a finished surface, rotating it
can also cause scratches. To protect the customer's office furniture, use a cloth to cover the work area.
Ink Spills
The Printhead and Ink Loader Assemblies contain liquid ink. To avoid ink spills, allow the printer to cool for
30 minutes before removing components. This allows the liquid ink to solidify. If you must remove the
Printhead and Ink Loader Assemblies while they are still warm, observe the following precautions:
Never place the assemblies directly onto carpeting, upholstery, or finished surfaces.
Place the assemblies on several sheets of paper and ensure they cannot be tipped over.
Never place the Printhead on its side (keep the reservoirs facing up).
Use a cloth to cover your work area.

Handling Parts

Printer parts can be damaged by mishandling them. This topic provides a review of the Electro-Static
Discharge (ESD) precautions and lists the components that can be physically damaged by improper handling.
Damage from ESD
Many of the printer assemblies are susceptible to ESD. When handling parts, always observe the proper
precautions for ESD, which include the following:
Use a static dissipative mat, wristband, and grounding cord with clips.
Use proper packaging for static sensitive components.
Keep replacement parts in their packaging until you are ready to install them.
Failure to protect parts from ESD can cause damage that leads to repeat
service calls.
