long as pcAnywhere is also installed on your server. Using these two methods you
can accomplish many of the tasks you normally perform at your server. Additional
tasks may be performed using the Management Port Passthru option explained
later in this chapter.
Text Console Redirection
When you choose Text Console Redirection, Integrated RA displays the server
screen on your remote client and directs control of the server keyboard to the
remote client. This method works best for network operating systems that are text-
based, such as NetWare and SCO UNIX servers, or servers that can be set to
display in text mode, such as OS/2.
NOTE
Integrated RA does not support the redirection of IBM OS/2
graphics screens to the remote client using the Text Console
Redirection option. However, IBM OS/2 does provide a way to
switch to text mode. For more information, see "Switching to
Text Mode in OS/2," later in this section.
While the console is redirected, you can perform operations as if you were sitting
in front of the server. For example, you can execute NOS-level commands, check
the contents of directories, and edit configuration files.
When keyboard commands are redirected to the server keyboard from a remote
client, keystrokes on a generic terminal keyboard may not control all PC keyboard
keys. Because there is no direct mapping between a generic terminal keyboard and
a PC keyboard, most special keys on the PC keyboard must be emulated using
character strings. For information on keyboard mapping, see Appendix D.
If you are using a non-U.S. keyboard on the server, you can use the Configuration
Utility to specify a keyboard layout that matches the keyboard driver being used
by the server's operating system. For more information on selecting a keyboard
layout, see "Selecting Keyboard Layouts," in Chapter 3.
NOTE
Console redirection is automatically enabled during a remote
server reset so that you can view boot-up messages as they
appear on the server monitor.
When you want to relinquish control of the server and return to the Integrated RA
Management Program, press Ctrl-B.
