 For a new machine, change the hydraulic
oil filter when the stump grinder has
been operating for 10 hours. Replace
with the same type of in-tank filter
element supplied originally, available
through Carlton or Carlton dealers.
From this point on, change the filter
every 200 hours of operation.
 Change hydraulic oil every 500 hours of
operation or at least once a year
depending on use. Flush the hydraulic
tank when changing the hydraulic oil.
Replace oil if it has a burnt odor or if it
is contaminated. Replace oil if the
stump grinder has been stored for a long
period of time (all winter).
 Drain the hydraulic tank using the drain
plug located on the bottom of the tank.
Dispose of used oil according to state
regulations.
HYDRAULIC OIL COOLER
(only on remote control machines)
 There is a hydraulic oil cooler on all
remote control machines to keep the
hydraulic oil from over heating. There is
a temp sensor in the bottom of the oil
cooler and if the oil temperature rises to
140° or higher the fan comes on to cool
the oil. The fan may go on and off as the
temperature of the oil changes
depending on the environment and the
operation of the grinder.
 Keep the fins clean. Use a garden hose
and a mild detergent. Do not use a
power washer as it may cause the fins to
bend. Do not use an industrial strength
detergent that may cause the metal to
deteriorate.
 Inspect all connections and hoses for
leaks and wear. Replace if necessary.
Use extra care when inspecting hoses
with fluid under pressure. DO NOT use
your finger or hand to inspect for leaks,
use a board or cardboard. Follow all
safety procedures at the beginning of the
Servicing Hydraulics section.
