5 .2 Rem ova l of Ex ist ing Boiler From Com m on Vent
Syst em
When exist ing boiler is rem oved from com m on vent ing
syst em , com m on vent ing syst em is likely t o be t oo large for
proper vent ing of appliances rem aining connect ed t o it .
Aft er rem oval of exist ing boiler, following st eps shall be
followed wit h each appliance rem aining connect ed t o com m on
vent ing syst em placed in operat ion, while ot her appliances
rem aining connect ed t o com m on vent ing syst em are not in
operat ion:
• Seal any unused openings in com m on vent ing syst em .
• Visually inspect vent ing syst em for proper size and
horizont al pit ch. Det erm ine t here is no blockage or
restrictions, leakage, corrosion and other deficiencies which
could cause an unsafe condit ion.
• When pract ical, close all building doors, windows, and
all doors bet ween space in which appliances rem aining
connect ed t o com m on vent ing syst em are locat ed and
ot her spaces of building. Turn on clot hes dryer and any
appliance not connect ed t o com m on vent ing syst em .
Turn on exhaust fans, such as range hoods and bat hroom
exhaust so t hey will operat e at m axim um speed. Do not
operate summer exhaust fan. Close fireplace dampers.
• Turn on appliance being inspected. Follow lighting
instructions. Adj ust therm ostat so appliances will operate
continuously.
• Test for spillage at draft hood relief opening after 5
minutes of main burner operation. Use flame of match or
candle, sm oke from cigarette, cigar or pipe.
• Det erm ine each appliance rem aining connect ed t o com m on
vent ing syst em properly vent s when t est ed as out lined
above. Then ret urn doors, windows, exhaust fans and any
ot her gas- burning appliance t o t heir previous condit ion of
use.
• Any im proper operat ion of com m on vent ing syst em
should be corrected so installation conform s with Nat ional
Fuel Code, ANSI Z223.1/ NFPA 54 and/ or Nat ural Gas
and Propane I nst allat ion Code, CAN/ CSA B149.1. When
re-sizing any portion of com m on venting system , com m on
vent ing syst em should be re- sized t o approach m inim um
size as det erm ined using appropriat e t ables in Chapt er 13
of t he Nat ional Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/ NFPA 54 and/
or Nat ural Gas and Propane I nst allat ion Code, CAN/ CSA
B149.1.

5.3 Definitions

Coaxial piping – Exhaust and air int ake pipe have a
com m on axis.

Twin Pipe - Exhaust and int ake air are separat e pipes,
can be t erm inat ed using single wall t erm inals from t he
vent manufacturer or field built configuration using elbows
or t ees.
