Grounding and Lightning Safety
Before erecting the mast, check for overhead power lines. Never deploy
the mast where there is a possibility of direct or indirect contact with a
power line.
Keep the mast a distance equal to or greater than twice its height away
from power lines. This will ensure that the antenna, masts, guy ropes,
and cables will not contact power lines if it falls either during installation
or later. A person touching any part of a mast or even standing near a
mast that contacts a power line can be seriously injured or killed.
Beware of underground power lines. Before deploying any ground
stakes, be sure to check the area for warnings of buried cables.
• Keep guy ropes away from power lines
• Never work with a mast or related structure during a electrical storm
• Do not stand near the mast, deploy or retract the mast during
electrical storm activity
• Always ground the mast
Before setting up your mast, radio or antenna,
contact the BDE NetOps and request the cut sheet
which should have:
• Grid coordinates where your mast should be located
• Azimuth, which is location your antenna should point to the other
antenna
• Frequency
• Channel size in MHz (10,20,40)
• IP address of radio which you will connect to so you can test the
connection
