Probable Causes - No lamp power to the gauge's backlight pin (pin 1).
Procedure:
Switch the ignition and the headlights on. Turn the backlight dimming control to full
brightness and check the backlighting in all gauges and in the tachometer. Find the
results in the following table and take the appropriate action:
Symptom
If one gauge has no backlighting:
If more than one gauge has no backlighting:
If all gauges plus tachometer have no
backlighting:
If just one gauge has no backlighting, replace that gauge unless it is the last gauge on
the chain.
If it is the last gauge on the chain, replace the 5-wire cable assembly that
feeds it.
If the replacement 5-wire cable assembly doesn't help, replace the gauge.
If the gauge still has no backlighting, replace the gauge just ahead of it in
the chain—its output pin for the +12 volt lamp power could be damaged.
If more than one gauge has no backlighting, the problem lies in the +12 volt lamp
power distribution in the 5-wire cable assemblies (or a damaged 5-wire cable assem-
bly connector in a gauge). To find out which:
1. Gain access to the rear of the dash panel and locate the last gauge on the 5-wire
cable assembly chain whose backlighting works.
2. Replace the 5-wire cable assembly that connects that gauge to the gauge whose
backlighting does not work.
3. If the replacement cable assembly does not correct the problem, one of those two
gauges connectors is bad and that gauge must be replaced.
