Probable Causes - No +12 volts or ground to the gauge; defective gauge.
Procedure: (see Figure 5-2)
1. Verify the 5-wire cable plug is fully inserted into the rear of the affected gauge. If
more than one gauge is affected, locate the first gauge in the chain with the prob-
lem and inspect at that point.
2. Unplug the 5-wire plug from the affected gauge (if more than one gauge is affect-
ed, locate the first gauge in the chain with the problem and unplug its connec-
tor).
3. Inspect the 5-wire cable, its plugs, and the gauge receptacle for loose, missing, or
broken wires or pins. Replace defective parts. If okay, continue with next step.
4. Set the voltmeter to measure 20 DC volts.
5. Switch the ignition on.
6. Measure the voltage between 5-wire plug pins 5 (+12V) and 3 (ground). You
should measure the battery voltage.
a.
If no voltage is measured, follow the vehicle wiring diagrams and trace
the +12V wire and ground back through the 5-wire cables to their
sources. Measure for voltage at each connection, checking for open,
shorted or loose wires and connections, blown fuses, etc.
b. If battery voltage is measured and the connector was plugged in cor-
rectly, temporarily substitute another gauge to confirm the defect. If this
corrects the problem, replace the suspect gauge.
