5.2.3. Cooling and purging the frame with air

is caused by varying ambient and process heat effects. The resulting
physical stress can distort scanner frame dimensions and distort the sensor
path. However, the expansion joint relieves these stresses.
The expansion joint consists of a nylon bearing, a steel plate, and steel
bushings through slotted holes in the bottom of the end support. The
bearing allows the scanner frame to move in the cross direction. The
scanner frame is allowed to float, even when the mounting bolts between
the end support and the scanner mounting pedestal are tightened.
The shipping bolts must be removed for the expansion joint to operate
properly. See Section 3.5.
The Precision Platform Scanner also uses clean, low-pressure air to control
the cable end enclosure. The air provides the following functions:
• Purges and prevents contaminants from entering the scanner.
• Circulates air within the cable end enclosure (and the scanner
beams if the optional dirty environment beam seals are present)
creating a slight positive pressure.
• Cools the head drive motor within the cable end support.
Air provided by a blower (customer supplied) supplies scanner purge and
cooling air. The air enters the scanner through a duct collar at the top of the
cable end support. Air purge is required on scanners with ambient
temperatures above 55°C (130°F) or very dusty locations (for example,
tissue machines). Additional information can be found on the scanner
installation drawings.
The Precision Platform Scanner can operate in temperatures up to 55°C
(130°F) without air purge. With air purge, the Precision Platform Scanner
can operate in temperatures up to 94°C (200°F). The air purge helps to
maintain critical components such as the power track system, head drive
motor, and head drive belts at safe operating temperatures.
