542 Wheels and tyres
Removing a wheel
Requirements:
The vehicle is raised (
page 540).

When changing a wheel, avoid applying any force
to the brake discs, since this could impair the
level of comfort when braking.
* NOTE Damage to threading from dirt on
wheel bolts
Do not place wheel bolts in sand or on
#
a dirty surface.
Unscrew the uppermost wheel bolt com‐
#
pletely.
Screw centring pin

into the thread
#
instead of the wheel bolt.
Unscrew the remaining wheel bolts com‐
#
pletely.
Remove the wheel and, if necessary, store it
#
in the load compartment.

Fitting a new wheel
Requirements:
The wheel is removed (

& WARNING Risk of accident from losing a
wheel
Oiled, greased or damaged wheel bolt/wheel
nut threads or wheel hub/wheel mounting
bolt threads can cause the wheel bolts/
wheel nuts to come loose.
As a result, you could lose a wheel while driv‐
ing.
Never oil or grease the threads.

In the event of damage to the threads,
#
contact a qualified specialist workshop
immediately.
Have the damaged wheel bolts or dam‐
#
aged hub threads replaced.
Do not continue driving.
#
Observe the information on the choice of
#
tyres (
page 534).

For tyres with a specified direction of rotation,
an arrow on the side wall of the tyre indicates
the correct direction of rotation. Observe the
direction of rotation when fitting.
