Extreme Networks recommends placing no more than three chassis next to each other due to chassis-to-
chassis heating. The following are some general recommendations for installing your BlackDiamond
10K series and BlackDiamond 8810 switches:
A minimum of 17.32 inches (44 cm) between each set of three BlackDiamond switches.
or
Place patch panels between each set of three BlackDiamond switches. A patch panel does not require
any power and does not generate any heat.
To ensure proper airflow through a BlackDiamond switch, refer to the following recommendations
when you are installing your switch:
BlackDiamond switches require approximately 1.5 inches (3.81 cm) to 3 inches (7.62 cm) around both
the front and rear of the chassis from any cabinet wall or other obstruction for proper airflow.
Air temperature measured 1 inch (2.54 cm) from the fan inlet should be less than 104 °F (40 °C).
The airflow of a BlackDiamond 10K series and BlackDiamond 8810 switch moves through the power
supplies and is independent of the airflow through the modules as shown in
example, if the power supply fans fail, the airflow through the module area of the chassis will not cool
down the power supplies. The direction of the airflow is as follows:
Airflow for cooling power supplies moves front to back as you face the chassis.
Airflow for cooling modules moves left to right as you face the chassis.
