CLEANING THE TAPE TRANSPORT
The tape transport should be thoroughly
cleaned
after:
1.
Eight hours of operation.
2.
Ten full-reel passes
of
IBM Dynexcel or
HD
tape.
3.
Four hours of operation
or
the equivalent of two
full-reel passes
of
Mylar
tape.
For efficient cleaning,
to ols
are available in a tape
transport cleaning kit (I BM part 352465).
CAUTION
When cleaning the transport area
,
care
must
be taken to
prevent
any
IBM tape cleaner (I BM part
51
7960) fro
m
coming in contact with the skin as
a
toxic effect may
result
.
Also
,
prevent any .tape cleaner
from
ge tting on
bearings o
r bushings
because it leaches oil fro
m
them.
Do
not use any
metal instrument
to clean the
vacuum
columns.
Use the foll
owing proce dure as a guide in cleaning the
tape transport. Refer to Figures 32 and 33 for location of
items
named.
1.
Unloa
d
magnetic tape from tape drive.
2.
Remove dust from reel and transport
area
with lint-
free clo th.
3.
Clean split guides with small brush (I BM part 55694 5)
or
clean type writer brush. Remove accumulate
d

oxide from surface of guides and between elements
with lin
t-free
cloth moistened with tape transport
cleaner.

Clean H-shield and erase head with lint-free cloth
moistened with tape transport cleaner.
5.
Clean tape cleaner blade with small
brush
(IBM part
556945), using light pressure to avoid
damaging
cleaner
blade
.
If necessary
,
moisten brush slightly
with tape transport cleaner to remove stubborn
oxide clumps. Clean out tape cleaner
block
aperture
with cotton swab.
Be
sure that no cotton fibers
remain
.
6.
Clean rewind idlers with lint-free cloth moistened
with tape transport cleaner. Use a wooden tooth-
pick to remove stubborn oxide
clumps.
7.
Clean capstans with lint-free cloth moistened lightly
with tape transport cleaner
.
Use very little transport
cleaner as excessive amounts may deteriorate capstan
material.
8.
Clean prolay idlers with lint-free cloth moistened
with tape transport cleaner.
9.
Clean read/write head with cotton swab moistened
lightly with tape transport cleaner.
10.
Clean vacuum columns weekly
,
using a lint-free cloth
or pad moistened with tape transport cleaner. Use
wooden toothpick to remove stubborn oxide
clumps.
