In
the interest of safety, all
IBM
machines are designed to
meet stringent safety requirements. These safety require-
ments are met if all machine covers are kept closed.
In
addition to improving appearance, the covers of
IBM
machines have been designed to safeguard personnel
against possible injury during operation. While some
hazards (such as moving mechanical parts) are obvious,
others are not. Electrical potentials and acoustical noise
are in the latter category.
While
IBM
maintains vigorous attention to safety on all
of its machines, the effectiveness of safeguards is decreased
by failure to keep the covers closed when the machines are
running.
Appendix B.
Safety
The frames of all
IBM
equipment have been made
electrically safe by recommended grounding practices,
and the covers have been designed to reduce noise below
any possible hearing damage level. Operation with the
covers open, however, causes needless exposure to these
unseen hazards. Because of this fact,
IBM
strongly re-
commends that all personnel associated with the equip-
ment follow the simple safety-first procedure of keeping
the covers closed whenever the machine is operating.
In
addition to the safety aspects of this procedure, the visual
and aural environments of the installation are significantly
enhanced.
