output for the 1800 system. The
IBM
1053 Printer provides additional output typewriter
printers for the 1800 system. A maximum of two 1816's
and six 1053 's, or one 1816 and seven 1053 's, or eight
1053's can be attached to the 1800 system.
The printer portion of the 1816 is physically and
functionally the same as the 1053 Printer. Therefore, the
printer description is the same for these two units.
Printer
The printers provide output at a maximum rate of 14.8
characters per second and operate under direct program
control. Data and control characters (space, tabulate, etc.)
are sent to the printer by means of a write command
issued to the printer. One data or control character is
transferred to the printer by each write command. When
a character is received, the printer either prints the
character or performs the control function specified by
the character.
Keyboard
The input speed of the keyboard is 20 characters per
second. The keyboard is also under direct program control.
When a key is struck, a coded character representing
the key struck and a keyboard service interrupt are emitted
by the keyboard. The keyboard service interrupt signals the
program that a character is ready to be read into main
storage. The character will be read into main storage by a
subsequent read command from the stored program.
Keyboard entries are not automatically printed. The
processor-controller must be programmed to provide a
printed output for each keyboard entry.

causes an interrupt which signals the program that a key-
board entry is desired. The proceed light is turned off
when this key is pressed.
The HOF
