IBM 1627 Plotter
The IBM 1627
Plotter provides
an exceptionally
versatile,
and easy-to-operate
plotting
system for the
1800 system.
One 1627 (model 1 or 2) can
be
attached
to
the
1800
system and operates
under
direct
program
control.
Plotting
is initiated by a write command
issued
to
the
1627, causing one word of
data
to be sent to the
1627.
The data word is converted to incremental
pen movement
on the paper surface (y-axis)
andlor
incremental
paper
movement under the pen (x-axis).
The pen is mounted in a carriage that
travels
horizon-
tally (in 1
I
1 OO-inch increments) across the
paper. Vertical
plotting is achieved
by
rotation (in
1/l00-inch
increments)
of the pin-feed drum, which also acts as a
platen (Figure
17).
The drum and
pen
carriage are
bidirectional; that is,
the paper moves up or down and the
pen moves right
or
left.
Co
ntrol is also
provided
to raise or lower
the pen
in relation to the chart surface
.

Operating Procedures
The Vernier Control
is
provided on the 1627 model 2 to
vary the
size
of pen carriage increments. In this way, the
pen traverse is adjusted to match the printed scale on the
chart paper which may vary due
to
high or low humidity.
For work with nonscale
paper
,
the control should
be
cen
tered
at the zero position.
The Carriage Single Step
Switch
allows the pen carriage to
be moved
in
single-step increments (I/I00-inch) either
left
or
right. This allows accurate manual alignment of
carriage along the y-axis of the graph.
The Carriage Fast
Run
Switch
allows
the pen
carriage to
be
stepped rapidly to the left or right at a
rate
of
120
steps
per second. This switch is
used
to manually
position
the
carriage.
The Power On/Off Switch
is used to turn
power
on or off
in the
1627.
The power on
light
indicates when
power
is
on in the 1627.
