UNLOADING MAGNETIC TAPE
1.
Press RESET, if ready light is on.
2.
Press LOAD REWIND.
3.
When load point is reached, press UNLOAD. This
raises head
assembly,
removes
tape
from vacuum
columns, and lowers power window.
4.
Press reel release (A)
and
manually rewind fIle reel
counterclockwise using finger hold
(B)
on tape reel.
5.
Open left hub latch (C) and remove file reel. If
resistance is encountered in removing reel,
exert
pressure from rear of reel with hands
as
near to hub
as possible. Never rock reel using outer edge
of
reel.
PLACING TAPE MARKERS ON MAGNETIC TAPE
Magnetic tape
must
have some
blank space
at
the begin-
ning and end of the
reel
to allow
threading through the
transport mechanism.
Reflective strips called tape markers
are
placed
on the tape to enable
the tape unit
to sense
the
beginning
and end
of
the
usable portion of the tape. The
tape
unit
senses the
markers
as either
a load-point marker,
where reading or
writing is to begin, or
as
the end-of-tape

End-of-tape Marker

marker,
approximately
where writing
is to
stop.
The markers are small pieces of
transparent
plastic with
a
thin film
of aluminum
on one side which is
covered
with
pressure sensitive adhesive. The markers
are
placed
on
the
base (uncoated) side of the tape. New reels
of
tape
ob-
tained
from
IBM have these markers
in
position. However,
an operator should know how to put them on.
The Load Point Marker must be positioned
a
minimum of
10 feet from the start of the tape to
allow
enough tape for
threading on the tape unit. More than 10 feet may be
allowed if desired. To indicate load point
,
the marker
must be parallel to and not more than 1/32 inch from the
operator side
of
the tape when the reel is mounted
as
shown
at
the left.
The End-Of- Tape Marker is usually placed
about
14
feet
from the end of the tape. This allows at least 10 feet of
trailer and 4 feet for writing data after end-of-tape marker
is sensed. To indicate end of tape,
the
marker must be
placed parallel to and not more than 1/32 inch from the
machine side of the
tape
when the reel is mounted as
shown at the left.
