DISK CARTRIDGE HANDUNG
The disk
cartridge is a
precision instrument
which requires
careful handling and
housekeeping
procedures to ensure
data integrity. The
follo
wing practices
result
in
a
normal
trouble·free
life
for the
disk
cartridge
.
1.
When
removing a cartridge
from
the 1810 always
close the cartridge
door by pressing
down on
it.
This
should be
done so dust and dirt
do not
accumulate
inside the cartridge.
Closing
the
cartridge door also
immobilizes the
disk in
the
cartridge
.
2.
Clean
the cartridge
protective
covers periodically
to
remove any
buildup
of
dust. Use
a
soft
lint-free
cloth or
paper wipe.
3.
Have
cracked,
distorted, or otherwise
damaged
covers
replaced.
4.
Keep
hands,
pencils, or other objects
off
the disk
surfaces.
The disk
surfaces
can be
distorted
or
damaged through
impact
or
excessive pressure
or
abrasion.
Should
a
cartridge
be suspected
of damage,
68
IBM
1800 Operating Procedures
have it inspected by
a
customer
engineer
before
attempting
to use it
on a
device.
5.
Coffee
and
other beverages spilled on the cartridge
may require that the cartridge
be
reconditioned.
Keep
all
beverages off the drive
and away from
the
cartridge
storage
area.
6.
On
the disk storage drive
,
the disk cartridge
is
sup-
plied with
air
that is taken
from
the room
and
filtered at the intake of the drive unit. The cover of
the disk drive should always be kept closed while the
drive is in operation to keep dust from bypassing the
filter.
7.
The disk cartridge should always be placed
on a
table
or other flat surface that is free
of other objects.
If
the cartridge is dropped
on a small,
hard
object,
the
die cast
aluminum
hub can be damaged.
8.
Remember,
the disk
cartridge
may contain informa-
tion that is vital
to
the installation
.
It is
advantageous
to protect it
as
much as possible.
