1. Pull the appliance out of the shipping box. Remove and discard all promotio-
nal labels, stickers, and packaging materials attached to your espresso machi-
ne, but do not remove the model label and serial number at the bottom of the
appliance. Always ensure that young children do not play with any parts or
accessories or the packaging!
IMPORTANT - Please, do not forget to remove the plastic strip between the val-
ve at the bottom of the water tank and the water inlet of the machine. Other-
wise, the water cannot flow. The pump of the water system could get damaged,
when operated without water.
2. Before discarding the packaging, ensure that you have found all parts and
accessories. See: 'Knowing Your Design Espresso Machine Basic'.

straight upwards. Do not attempt to tilt the water tank or move the water tank side-
wise to avoid damage.
3. Clean all removable parts (water tank, portafilter, filter basket, drip tray, black
sleeve of the steam wand) and the accessories in warm dishwater (see: 'Care
and Cleaning').

scouring pads), or any corrosive cleaners (e.g. disinfectants, chemical bleach) for
cleaning. Do not use any hard or sharp-edged objects for cleaning the appliance.
Do not place the appliance in an automatic dishwasher.
TIP - You may clean the removable parts and accessories in an automatic dish-
washer. However, be aware that the surface of the water tank could get scrat-
ched, when rubbing at other surfaces during the cleaning cycle.
4. After cleaning, place the appliance on an appropriate working place near a
suitable wall power outlet (see: 'General Safety Instructions').
5. Ensure to fill the water tank up to the MAX filling level marking with cold, fresh
tap water or low-mineral bottled table water (see: 'Operation / Filling the Water
Tank'). Ensure that the drip tray is empty and installed correctly (see: 'Operati-
on / Emptying the Drip Tray'). Push the black sleeve to the stop onto the steam
wand. Connect the appliance to a sufficient wall power outlet (see: 'Important
Safeguards for Electrical Appliances'). Press the power button (power indicator
illuminates red). Wait until the green espresso indicator illuminates.
6. Place a sufficiently large and heat-resistant bowl (capacity at least 1/2 litres)
