Cleaning Detector External Surfaces

Flushing the Flowcell

Thermo Scientific
The external surfaces of the detector should be kept clean and dry. To clean the outside of the
detector, wipe it with a dust-free cloth or a damp cloth (moistened with water only) to remove
dirt or stains.
An applied lamp voltage greater than 4.5 V can be an indication of a dirty flowcell. If purging
the flowcell with water does not reduce the lamp voltage, you might need to flush-clean the
flowcell.
A 20% nitric acid (v/v) solution is an effective flush-cleaning agent for organic films and
residue. Flush the pump and the flowcell with water prior to performing a nitric acid flush.
Remove any trace of organic solvent in the pump, plumbing to the flowcell, or the flowcell
itself prior to initiating an acid flush. A 20% nitric acid solution will not damage a Thermo
Fisher Scientific analytical pump.
CAUTION Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent that reacts vigorously and violently with
flammable organic solvents.
To flush the flowcell
1. Connect the Surveyor LC Pump Plus directly to the Surveyor RI Plus Detector.
2. Launch ChromQuest.
The online Instrument window appears.
3. Open the RI Diagnostic page:
a. Choose Control > Instrument Status.
The Instrument Status window appears.
b. Click the Surveyor RI Plus tab.
c. Click the RI Diagnostic tab.
4. In the Purge Control area, click On.
5. Pump the acid solution at 1 mL/min for 3 to 4 minutes.
6. Turn off the pump flow and allow the 20% nitric acid solution to stand in the flowcell for
3 to 10 minutes.
7. Turn the pump flow back on and continue pumping the 20% nitric acid solution for
3 to 5 minutes. Allowing the 20% nitric acid to stand in the cell for longer periods can
harm the cell.
