Gear lash measurement and adjustment

1. Insert the semi circular clip into the crank-
case.
2. Install the middle drive shaft assembly onto
the crankcase.
Install

tighten the three bearing housing securing
bolts and four cover bolts to specification.
Tightening torque:
Bearing housing bolt:
25 Nm (2.5m-kg, 18fflb)
Gear cover #1 bolt:
24 Nm (2.4m-kg, 17fflb)
4. Install the middle-drive-gear holder onto the
middle gear cover.

5. Tighten the holder bolts as tight as neces-
sary to keep the middle gear from turning.
6. Set the dial gauge on the outside edge of
yoke so that it is positioned over the center-
line
rotate the drive yoke back and forth. Note
the lash measurement on the dial gauge.
Middle gear lash:
0.1 ~0.2 mm (0.004 ~ 0.008 in)
7. Check the gear lash at four positions. Ro-
tate the yoke 90 degrees each time, and re-
peat the gear lash check.

8. If the measurement exceeds the specified
gear lash at any of the four points, the gear
lash must be adjusted.
9. Place the universal joint tool (with both
adapters) on the U-joint on the middle drive
shaft.
10. Install the securing nut onto the middle drive
shaft, and apply Loctite® Stud N'bearing
Mount to the threads. Carefully tighten the
securing nut, then check the gear lash.
Tighten the nut a little more, and check the
gear lash. Repeat this tighten-and-check
procedure until
of the
yoke
bearing
hole. Gently
