Disassembly

1. Remove the clips from the bearings in the
middle gear yoke.
2. Place the U-joint in a press. With a
suitable diameter pipe beneath the yoke,
press the bearing into the pipe as shown in
the illustration.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to lightly tap the yoke with a
punch.
3. Repeat the procedure for the opposite bear-
ing, and remove the yoke.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to lightly tap the yoke with a
punch.
The following procedures should be performed only
if the middle-drive-shaft bearing or the middle-
drive-shaft gear must be replaced.
4. Install the universal joint holder onto the
middle-drive-shaft U-joint, and remove the
drive shaft nut.
5. Remove the U-joint, bearing-housing plate,
the bearing housing, and the washers and
spacers from the middle drive shaft.
CAUTION:
Discard the collapsible collar. It must be re-
placed whenever the middle gear is dis-
assembled.

Inspection

Middle gears
1. Inspect the gear teeth on all the gears. If
discoloration, galling, pitting, or excessive
wear is found on any gear, replace all the
middle gears as a set.
Bearings
1. Put your finger on the race, and check the
bearing movement. If any bearing is rough,
replace it.
U-joint
1. Install the bearings onto the yoke, and
check the bearing movement. If there is any
noticeable play in the bearings, replace the
universal joint assembly (yoke, bearings,
and final-drive half of the U-joint).

Assembly

1. Install the needle bearing inner race onto
the middle drive shaft and install the ball
bearing into the bearing housing.
2. Assemble
the
shown in the illustration. Finger-tighten the
securing nut.
