Changing Link Rate Settings for LAN and WAN Ports
The Link Rate Settings section on the Set Link page displays the current settings for the
LAN and WAN interfaces. The default setting is auto-negotiate.
Ethernet auto-negotiation is often unreliable, especially between different vendors or old
and new networking equipment. Failure of auto-negotiation is generally not a cause for
concern. However, if the negotiated rates change intermittently or the link is reported as no
link or down, the link rate may need to be set manually. Both sides of the link MUST be set
to the same rate. Inconsistent rates may cause "flutter", leading to intermittent voice
outages.
When connecting a device to the system that can not be hard-coded, set the ports to auto-
negotiate (default).
The link rate of an interface can be set to the following static values:
10baseT-HD - 10 Mbps at half duplex
10baseT-FD - 10 Mbps at full duplex
100baseT-HD - 100 Mbps at half duplex
100baseT-FD - 100 Mbps at full duplex
1000baseT-HD - 1000 Mbps at half duplex
1000baseT-FD - 1000 Mbps at full duplex

Note:
If the Set Link field is set to Autonegotiate and you experience frequent
network disconnections or packet loss, this could be because of a Speed
or Duplex Mismatch. If Ethernet interface speed or duplex mismatches
result when the Link Rate is configured for Autonegotiate, ShoreTel
recommends manual configuration of the Ethernet speed and duplex on
both the VPN concentrator and the Ethernet switch.
Caution:
When the link rate is set manually, ensure that the device at the far
end of the connection can communicate at the desired rate.
Incompatible rates can cause a loss of communication with the
system. If the port speed and duplex do not match, the switch may
lose connectivity with the VPN concentrator.
