OSx allows you to set the primary of a multiple-station system to
out_of_service.
With no primary on the system, you lose the capability of storing trend data,
report outputs, log data, as well as all other functions supported by the primary,
including the capability of archiving and running reports and batch programs.
When a batch program or report fails to run, and it controls critical values in a
controller, unpredictable operation by the controller could cause death or
serious injury to personnel, and/or damage to equipment.
Do not set the primary to out_of_service unless unusual conditions exist, such
as multiple primaries on the system.
When a role change is successful, the system updates the Network Setup
and Network Status dialog boxes to reflect the new role of each station.
When a role change fails, the information in these dialog boxes does not
change.
When a role change to a new primary fails, the system reports the failure on
the original primary with a system warning alarm, and on the station
selected to be the new primary, with a message on the system message line
at the bottom of the OSx main screen.
When a role change not involving the primary fails, for example, assigning a
station the backup role, the system reports the failure only on the station
that failed to change roles. The system does not report a failed role change
on stations not involved in the change.
Although OSx does not normally allow a station to change roles when there
is no active primary on the system, the
in the Network Setup menu, and you can choose the out_of_service role for a
station.
OSx does not display any messages to report that the role change does not
occur. However, the role displayed for the station in the Network Setup and
Network Status menus does not change, indicating that the station's role
has not changed.
