All blades must be sharpened to the same angle, 30º.
Differing angles result in abrupt and irregular operation of
the saw chain, increase of the wear and will cause
breakage of the saw chain.
The front angle of 85º of the blade is the result of the cutting
depth of the rounded line. If a suitable file is used in a correct
manner, the correct front angle will be obtained
automatically (Fig. 49).
Files and how to work therewith (Fig. 50)
Use a special rounded file for saw chains (4 mm diameter)
to sharpen the saw chain. Standard rounded files are not
suitable for this work.
The file must only cut when pushed forward (arrow).
Raise the file when directing it backwards.
First sharpen the shortest blade. The length of this blade
will thus be the standard for all blades of the chain saw.
Always guide the file horizontally (90º with respect to the
guide bar).
The file support facilitates guiding the file. It is marked for
the correct 30º sharpening angle (keep marks parallel to the
saw chain when sharpening; refer to the illustration), and it
limits the correct cutting depth to 4/5 of the diameter of the
file. (Fig. 51)
After having sharpened the saw chain, the height of the
depth gauge must be checked with a chain calibrator.
Correct even the slightest excess height with a special flat
file (K).
Round the front of the depth gauge (L) (Fig. 52).
