Evaluation of the tree:
Direction of its inclination – loose or parched branches –
height of the tree – natural protruding part – is the tree
rotten?
- Take into account the direction and the speed of the wind.
If there are strong gusts, do not make any felling. Avoid
the sawdust (pay attention to the direction the wind is
blowing).
Cutting roots:
Start with the strongest root. First make the vertical cut and
then the horizontal one.
Notching the log (Fig. 18A):
- The felling notch will determine the direction of fall and
guide the tree. The log must be notched perpendicularly
to the direction of fall, and the notch 1/3 to 1/5 of the
diameter of the tree. Make the cut near to the soil.
- If you wish to correct the cut, always do it at the whole of
the width of the notch.
- Fell the tree (Fig. 19B) above the lower rim of the notch
(D). The cut must be exactly horizontal. The distance
between both cuts must be approximately 1/10 of the
diameter of the log.
- The material between both cuts (C) works as a hinge.
Never cut through – otherwise the tree will fall without any
control. Insert wedges in good time.
- Secure the cut only with plastic or aluminum wedges.
Never use steel wedges. If the chain saw abuts against a
steel wedge, it may become seriously damaged or break.
- When felling a tree, always keep to the flank of the side to
which the tree will fall.
- When walking back after having made the cut, watch out
for falling branches.
- When working on an inclined soil, the chain saw operator
must stay above or at the flank of the tree to be cut or of
the already cut tree.
- Watch out for logs that may roll towards you.

3.8 Transport and storage

- When changing location during work, switch off the chain
saw and actuate the chain brake to avoid inadvertent start
of the chain.
- Do not move or transport the chain saw with its chain
running.
- When transporting the chain saw over long distances, the
protective cover of the guide bar (delivered with the chain
saw) must be put on.
- Transport the chain saw catching it by the tubular handle
with the guide bar pointing backwards (Fig. 20). Avoid
touching the muffler.
- Secure a safe position of the chain saw during transport
by car, in order to avoid leakage of oil or saw chain oil.
- Store the chain saw in a safe manner at a dry location. It
must not be stored outside. Keep the chain saw away
from children.
- Before storing the chain saw for a long period of time you
must drain the fuel and oil tanks completely.
