25. Install the valve covers (Figure 5) onto the cyl-
inder head. Lubricate the new O-ring with lithium
soap grease, and torque the valve cover bolts to 10

26. If the intake manifold was removed, install it.
Lubricate a new O-ring with lithium soap grease,
and torque the intake manifold bolts to 10 N•m (89
in.-lb.).
27. If removed, install the exhaust manifold (B,
Figure 19) onto the rear cylinder. Install a new ex-
haust gasket, and torque the exhaust manifold nuts
(A, Figure 19) to 20 N•m (15 ft.-lb.).
28. Install the spark plugs. Torque the plugs to 20
N•m (15 ft.-lb.).
29. Install the engine into the frame as described in
Chapter Five.
30. Check and adjust the valves as described in
Chapter Three.
Inspection
1. Before removing the valves or cleaning the cyl-
inder head, perform the following leak test:
a. Position the cylinder head so the exhaust port
faces up. Pour solvent or kerosene into the ex-
haust port (Figure 28).
b. Turn the head over slightly and check the ex-
haust valve area on the combustion chamber
side. If the valve and seats are in good condi-
tion, there will be no leaks past the valve
seats. If any area is wet, the valve seat is not
sealing correctly. This can be caused by a
damaged valve seat and/or valve face, or by a
bent or damaged valve. Remove the valve,
and inspect the valve and seat for wear or
damage.
c. Pour solvent into the intake port and check
the intake valve.
2. Remove all traces of gasket material from the
mating surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder
block.
Cleaning the combustion chamber
with the valves removed can damage
the valve seat surfaces. A damaged or
Valve
even slightly scratched valve seat will
cause poor valve seating.
3. Without removing the valves, remove all carbon
deposits from the combustion chambers (A, Figure
29). Use a fine wire brush dipped in solvent or make
a scraper from hardwood. Be careful not to damage
the head, valves or spark plug threads.
4. Examine the spark plug threads (B, Figure 29)
in the cylinder head for damage. If damage is minor
or if the threads are dirty or clogged with carbon,
