sprocket on the cam chain drive as
sembly. If the chain is not held taut, the
chain may become kinked, and cause
damage to the crankcase, the cam
chain, or cam chain drive assembly.

15. Tie a safety wire around the cam chain and se-
cure the wire to the engine so the chain will not fall
into the crankcase.
16. Evenly loosen all seven cylinder head fasteners
1/4-turn at a time. Loosen the fasteners in sequence
by reversing the tightening sequence shown in Fig-
ure 15.
17. Once all the fasteners are loose, remove the two
cylinder head bolts (6 and 7, Figure 15), remove the
cylinder head nuts (1-4) from the cylinder studs,
and remove the cylinder head cap nut (5). Make
sure a washer comes out with the cap nut.
18. Lift the two cylinder head cover brackets (Fig-
ure 16) from the cylinder studs. Mark these brack-
ets so they can be reinstalled in the correct locations
during assembly.
CAUTION
The cooling fins are fragile and may
be damaged if they are tapped too
hard. Never use a metal hammer to
loosen the cylinder head.
19. Loosen the head by tapping around its perime-
ter with a plastic mallet.
20. Remove the cylinder head by pulling it straight
up and off the cylinder studs. Watch for the dowels
on the two rear studs. Untie the cam chain from the
engine while removing the head, then retie the
chain.
21. Remove the front cam chain guide (Figure 17)
from its boss in the crankcase.
22. Remove the two dowels (A, Figure 18) from
the cylinder studs, and remove the cylinder head
gasket (B).
23. Place a clean shop rag in the cam chain tunnel
in the cylinder to keep foreign matter out of the
crankcase.
