d. Use a bunjee cord to suspend the caliper from
the motorcycle.
3B. On 2001-on XVS1100 models and all
XVS1100A models, remove the two retaining bolts
(A and B, Figure 6). Lift the caliper from the pad
holder. Suspend it from the motorcycle with a
bunjee cord.
4. Remove the outboard brake pad (A, Figure 8)
and the inboard pad (Figure 9) from the pad holder.
5. Inspect the brake pads as described later in this
section.
6. Remove the pad spring (A, Figure 10) from the
caliper and check it for wear or fatigue. Replace the
pad spring as necessary.
WARNING
The brake pads must be replaced as
set. If any pad requires replacement,
replace both pads in both front cali
pers.
7. When new pads are installed in the caliper, the
master cylinder brake fluid level will rise as the cali-
per pistons are repositioned.
a. Clean all dirt and foreign matter from the top
of the master cylinder.
b. Remove the screws securing the master cylin-
der cover. Remove the cover, diaphragm plate
and the diaphragm from the master cylinder.
c. Slowly push the caliper pistons (B, Figure
10) into the caliper. Constantly check the res-
ervoir to make sure brake fluid does not over-
flow. Remove fluid if necessary.
d. The pistons should move freely. If they do not
move smoothly without sticking, the caliper
should be removed and serviced as described
in this chapter.
8. Push the caliper pistons until they bottom in the
bore to allow room for the new pads.
NOTE
When purchasing new pads, make
sure the friction compound of the new
pads are compatible with the disc ma
terial. Remove any roughness from
the backs of the new pads with a
fine cut file.
CAUTION
Position each brake pad so the fric
tion material faces in toward the
brake disc.

9. If removed, install the pad springs (Figure 11)
onto the pad holder and into the caliper (B, Figure
7). Always use new pad springs when installing
new brake pads.
10. Install the inboard (Figure 9), then outboard
pad (B, Figure 8), into the pad holder. The ears on
each pad must straddle the pad springs in the pad
holder.
WARNING
Use just enough grease to lubricate
the caliper pin and retaining bolt in
