any washer into its respective hole in the cardboard
template so bolts can be quickly identified during
assembly.
NOTE
Bolts No. 15 and No. 16 are silver col
ored. These bolts must be reinstalled
in their original locations during as
sembly.
7. Evenly loosen all the crankcase bolts 1/4 turn at
a time. Reverse the tightening sequence shown in
Figure 76 when loosening the bolts.
8. Set the crankcase on wooden blocks so the right
crankcase half faces up. Starting with bolt No. 19,
remove the right crankcase bolts in descending or-
der. Place each bolt in its corresponding hole in the
cardboard template. Note the following:
a. Discard the copper washer behind bolt No.
15. A new copper washer must be installed
during assembly.
b. Watch for the ground wire installed beneath
bolt No. 18.
c. Leave one right crankcase bolt finger-tight so
the crankcases will not separate as the cases
are turned over.
9. Turn the crankcase over so the left crankcase
half faces up. Starting with bolt No. 14, loosen and
remove the left crankcase bolts in descending order.
Place each bolt in its corresponding hole in the card-
board template.
10. Turn the crankcase over so the right crankcase
half faces up. Remove the one remaining right
crankcase bolt.
CAUTION
If it is necessary to pry apart the case
halves, do it very carefully. The crank
case mating surfaces must not be
damaged. If they are, the cases will
leak and must be replaced as a set.
They cannot be repaired.
11. Separate the crankcase halves by carefully tap-
ping around the crankcase perimeter with a plastic
mallet. Do not use a metal hammer. Separate the
crankcase halves by lifting the right case half off the
left half. The transmission and crankshaft assem-
blies should remain in the left crankcase half.
12. Watch for the following items when splitting
the cases. Remove them once the cases are apart.
