CAUTION
To avoid loss of spring tension, do not
compress the springs any more than
necessary to install the valve keepers.
9. Compress the valve springs with a valve spring
compressor and install the valve keepers (Figure
76).
10. When both valve keepers are seated around the
valve stem, slowly release the compressor. Remove
the compressor and inspect the keepers (Figure 84).
Tap the end of the valve stem with a soft-faced mal-
let to assure that the keepers are properly seated.
11. Repeat Steps 1-10 for the remaining valve.
12. Install the rocker arms and camshaft as de-
scribed in this chapter.
13. Install the cylinder head as described in this
chapter.
14. Adjust the valve clearance as described in
Chapter Three.
Valve Inspection
NOTE
When a valve needs to be replaced
also replace its valve guide. Do not
install a new valve into an old guide
or excessive wear will occur.
1. Clean the valve in solvent. Do not gouge or dam-
age the valve seating surface.
2. Inspect the contact surface of each valve for
burning (Figure 85). Minor roughness or pitting
can be removed by lapping the valve as described in
this chapter. Excessive unevenness indicates that
the valve is not serviceable. Replace the valve and
the valve guide.
3. Inspect the valve stem for wear and roughness.
Measure the runout as shown in Figure 86. Replace
the valve and valve guide if runout exceeds the ser-
vice limit in Table 2.
4. Measure the diameter of the valve stem with a
micrometer (Figure 87). Replace the valve and
valve guide if the diameter of the valve stem is out-
side the specified range.
5. Remove all carbon and varnish from the valve
guides with a stiff spiral wire brush.
6. Measure the inside diameter of the valve guide
with a small bore gauge (Figure 88), then measure
the gauge with a micrometer. Take a measurement
at the top, middle and bottom of the guide. Replace
