9. Remove the Woodruff key (C, Figure 53) from
the crankshaft.
10. Set the assembly down on the bench. If neces-
sary, remove the timing gear (A, Figure 54) from
the primary drive gear (B).
11. Remove each pin/spring assembly (Figure 55)
from the slots in the primary drive gear. A total of
six pins and six springs should be found. Store them
in a recloseable plastic bag.

Installation
1. Insert a pin into each spring (Figure 56) and in-
stall two sets of pins/springs into each slot on the
primary drive gear (Figure 55). Push the springs as
far apart as possible.
2. Apply grease to the dogs (A, Figure 57) on the
timing gear.
3. Position the timing gear so its index mark (C,
Figure 54) aligns with the keyway (D) on the pri-
mary drive gear. Set the dogs between the springs in
each gear slot and press the timing gear into place.
4. Install the primary drive gear/timing gear assem-
bly onto the crankshaft and install the Woodruff key
(C, Figure 53) into the keyway.
5. Install the slotted washer (Figure 52) so its slot
engages the Woodruff key.
6. Install a new lockwasher (Figure 51) and the
primary drive gear nut (B, Figure 50).
7. Hold the flywheel with the sheave holder and
torque the primary drive gear nut to 110 N•m (81
ft.-lb.).
8. Bend the ears of the lockwasher (B, Figure 50)
flat against the nut.
9. Make sure the front cylinder is still set to top
dead center on the compression stroke. If necessary,
set it as follows:
a. Set the rear cylinder to TDC by rotating the
engine clockwise until the T-mark aligns with
the alternator cover cutout.
b. Rotate the crankshaft another 290° clockwise
until the I-mark on the flywheel (A, Figure
58) aligns with the cutout in the alternator
cover (B).
c. The timing mark (A, Figure 59) on the timing
gear and cam chain drive assembly (B)
should align with the center of the mounting
