Jumps Out of Gear

1. Loose or damaged shift drum stopper arm.
2. Bent or damaged shift fork(s).
3. Bent shift fork shaft(s).
4. Damaged shift drum grooves.
5. Worn gear dogs or slots.
6. Broken shift linkage return spring.
7. Improperly adjusted shift lever position.

Incorrect Shift Lever Operation

1. Bent shift lever.
2. Stripped shift lever splines.
3. Damaged shift lever linkage.
4. Improperly adjusted shift pedal rod.
Excessive Gear Noise
1. Worn bearings.
2. Worn or damaged gears.
3. Excessive gear backlash.

FINAL DRIVE

Excessive Final Drive Noise
1. Low oil level.
2. Worn or damaged pinion and ring gears.
3. Excessive pinion-to-ring gear backlash.
4. Worn or damaged pinion gear and splines.
5. Scored driven flange and wheel hub.
6. Scored or worn ring gear and driven flange.
Excessive Rear Wheel Backlash
1. Worn driveshaft or pinion splines.
2. Loose gearcase bearing(s).
3. Worn driven flange and ring gear splines.
4. Excessive ring gear-to-pinion gear backlash.
Final Gearcase Oil Leak
1. Loose or missing cover bolts.
2. Damaged final gearcase seals.
3. Clogged breather.
4. Oil level too high.

CARBURETOR

Test the indicated items when experiencing a par-
ticular symptom.
Engine Will Not Start
Check the following items if the engine will not
start and the electrical and mechanical systems are
working correctly.
1. If there is no fuel going to the carburetors, check
for the following:
a. Clogged fuel tank breather.
b. Clogged fuel tank-to-carburetor line.
c. Clogged fuel filter.
d. Faulty fuel pump.
e. Faulty starting circuit cutoff relay.
f. Incorrect float adjustment.
g. Stuck or clogged float valve in carburetor(s).
2. If the engine is flooded (too much fuel), check
the following:
a. Flooded carburetor(s).
b. Float valve in carburetor(s) stuck open.
c. Clogged air filter element.
3. A faulty emission control system (if equipped)
can cause fuel problems. Check for a loose, dis-
connected or plugged emission control system
hoses.
4. If you have not located the problem in Steps 1-3,
check for the following:
a. Contaminated or deteriorated fuel.
b. Intake manifold air leak.
c. Clogged pilot or choke circuit.
Engine Starts but Idles and
Runs Poorly or Stalls Frequently
An engine that idles roughly or stalls may have
one or more of the following problems:
1. Clogged air cleaner.
2. Contaminated fuel.
3. Incorrect pilot screw adjustment.
4. Incorrect idle speed.
5. Loose, disconnected or damaged fuel and emis-
sion control vacuum hoses.
6. Intake air leak.
