A cylinder at TDC on the compression
stroke has free play in both rocker
arms, which indicates that both valves
are closed.
9. Make sure the cylinder is at TDC by pressing
each rocker arm. The intake and exhaust rocker
arms should have free play. If both rocker arms do
not have free play, rotate the engine an additional
360° until they do.
10. Check the clearance of both the intake and ex-
haust valves by performing the following. Refer to
Figure 16.
a. Insert a feeler gauge between the valve stem
and the adjuster end.
b. The clearance is correct if there is a slight
drag on the feeler gauge when it is inserted
and withdrawn. The correct valve clearance
for the intake and exhaust valves is listed in
Table 5.

11. If necessary, adjust the valve clearance by per-
forming the following:
a. Loosen the locknut on the valve adjuster.
b. With the feeler gauge between the valve stem
and the adjuster end, turn the valve adjuster to
obtain the specified clearance.
c. Hold the adjuster to prevent it from turning,
and torque the valve adjuster locknut to 27
N•m (20 ft.-lb.).
12. Use the flywheel nut to turn the crankshaft
clockwise until the front cylinder is at top dead cen-
ter on the compression stroke.
a. Set the rear cylinder to TDC by rotating the
engine clockwise until the T-mark (A, Figure
14) on the flywheel aligns with the alternator
cover cutout (B).
b. Rotate the crankshaft another 290° clockwise
until the I-mark on the flywheel (A, Figure
17) aligns with the cutout in the alternator
cover (B).
c. Check the timing mark on the front cam
sprocket plate (A, Figure 18). It should align
with the pointer on the front cylinder head
(B).
