tire, prying the bead over the rim with the first tool.
Be careful not to pinch the inner tube with the tire
irons.
8. When the upper bead is off the rim, remove the
nut from the valve stem. Remove the valve from the
hole in the rim and remove the tube from the tire
(Figure 53).

Step 9 is required only if it is neces
sary to completely remove the tire
from the rim.
9. Stand the wheel upright. Force the second bead
into the center of the rim. Insert the tire iron be-
tween the second bead and the side of the rim that
the first bead was pried over. Pry the second bead
off the rim (Figure 54), working around the wheel
with two tire irons as done earlier.
10. Inspect the rim as described in this chapter.
Installation
NOTE
Before installing the tire, place it in
the sun or in a hot, closed car. The
heat will soften the rubber and ease
installation.
1. Reinstall the rubber rim band. Align the hole in
the band with the valve hole in the rim.
2. Liberally sprinkle the inside of the tire with tal-
cum powder to reduce chafing between the tire and
tube.
3. Most tires have directional arrows on the side-
wall. Install the tire so the arrow points in the direc-
tion of forward rotation.
4. If the tire was removed, lubricate the lower
bead of the tire with soapy water and place the tire
against the rim. Align the valve stem balance mark
(Figure 46) with the valve stem hole in the rim.
5. Using your hand, push as much of the lower
bead past the upper rim surface as possible (Figure
55). Work around the tire in both directions (Figure
56).
6. Install the valve core into the valve stem in the
inner tube.
7. Put the tube into the tire and insert the valve stem
through the hole in the rim. Inflate the tube just
enough to round it out. Too much air will make tire
installation difficult; too little air increases the
chance of pinching the tube with the tire irons.
