2. Perform the cylinder head leak test described in
Cylinder Head in this chapter.
3. Remove the camshaft and rocker arms as de-
scribed in this chapter.
NOTE
A bore protector can be made from a
plastic 35 mm film canister (Figure
74). Cut out the bottom of the canister
and part of its side. Cut away enough
material so the canister can slide be
tween the valve assembly and the side
of the bore. The plastic canister pro

tects the bore from potential marring
by the valve spring compressor.
4. Insert a bore protector between the valve assem-
bly and the bore.
5. Install a valve spring compressor squarely over the
valve retainer. Make sure the opposite end of the com-
pressor rests against the valve head. See Figure 75.
CAUTION
To avoid loss of spring tension, do not
compress the valve spring any more than
necessary to remove the valve keepers.
6. Tighten the compressor until the valve keepers
separate from the valve stem. Remove both valve
keepers with a magnet, tweezers or needlenose pli-
ers (Figure 76).
CAUTION
Remove any burrs from the valve stem
grooves before removing the valve.
Burrs on the valve stem will damage
the valve guide when the stem passes
through it.
7. Inspect the valve stem grooves for burrs (Figure
77). Remove any burrs, then carefully remove the
valve spring compressor.
8. Remove the spring retainer (Figure 78).
9. Remove the valve spring (Figure 79).
10. Remove the oil seal from the valve guide (Fig-
ure 80). Discard the oil seal.
11. Remove the spring seat (Figure 81).
12. Remove the valve (Figure 82) from the cylin-
der head while rotating it slightly.
CAUTION
All the components of each valve as
sembly must be kept together (Figure
83). Place each set in a divided carton
