For safety, your child should always
be restrained while riding in your
car. This lessens the chance of injury
in an accident, sudden maneuver or
stop. Infants and young children are
too small to be fully protected by
your car's seat belts. They require
special child restraint systems. All
states have laws requiring that
children ride in proper child re-
straints. Check the laws in your state.

Never hold an infant in your arms
while riding in the car. No matter
how light the baby feels, or how
strong you think you are, you may
not be able to hang onto the infant in
a crash. If you are not wearing your
seat belt, you can crush the infant
between your body and the car's
interior. If you are wearing your seat
belt, you may reduce YOUR injuries
but the infant will fly out of your arms
and strike the interior. A properly-
installed child restraint system that
meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards (FMVSS) is the best pro-
tection available.

Child Restraint Systems

When you are shopping for a child
restraint system, check the following:
The child restraint system con-
forms to FMVSS-213. It will say so
on the box and seat.
The system fits your child. Each
child restraint system has height
and weight restrictions listed on
the box or seat.
The system fits your car's seat and
seat belts. All approved child
restraint systems are designed to
be secured in your car by the lap
belt or the lap belt portion of a lap/
shoulder belt.
