Glossary-14
Language consisting of words and symbols that are close to
normal English and, therefore, readily understandable by the
user. High level languages are oriented to problems or
commercial procedures and are the source languages for most
programs.
A visual indication that an object is in a special state. Often used
to denote that an item is selected.
Computer accessed by users which serves as a source of high
speed data processing for workstations with less computer
power. See also mainframe.
Connection between network and host computer.
Page description language developed by Hewlett Packard
Company. It supports graphics, text, and images with a wide
variety of fonts. It is designed to be printer independent.
Description of the general appearance of a color or the
wavelength of light reflected by pigment.
A small pictorial representation of a base window. When an icon
is used, it conserves screen space and keeps the window
available for easier access.
identifier. Character used to identify or name data and possibly to
indicate certain properties of that data.
Rectangular array of sample values. Each sample value
represents some gray level value or color. Also known as
"sampled image."
Area on a physical page that may contain text or graphics.
A selection within the system software that causes jobs for which
the required resources are not available become ineligible rather
than fault. Once those resources become available to the printer,
the job prints.
Generic term encompassing both word and data processing,
used to describe the entire scope of operations performed by a
computer.
1. To prepare the magnetic surface of a blank diskette so that it
can accept data. 2. To set all information in a computer system to
its starting values (usually the first step is accomplished when a
program is booted).
initial program load. For the optional open reel tape drive, the
internal initialization sequence whereby certain functions are
loaded into random access memory (RAM).
