Chapter 7 Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sterilization Procedures

Some components are compatible with several sterilization
methods. However, certain components, are not compatible
with some methods, which can cause equipment damage.
In this section, the sterilization methods for equipment compatible with ethylene
oxide gas sterilization or steam sterilization (autoclaving), listed in Table 6.1 on
page 76 are described.
 Ethylene oxide gas sterilization
As an alternative to high-level disinfection, the endoscope can be sterilized by
ethylene oxide gas. After performing manual cleaning and drying as described in
Section 7.3, "Precleaning" on page 93 and Section 7.5, "Manual cleaning" on
page 102 follow the procedures given below.
Exceeding the recommended parameters may cause
equipment damage.
The cleaning brushes are not compatible with ETO gas
sterilization.
After cleaning and drying as described in Section 7.5, "Manual cleaning" on
page 102, follow the procedures given below.
1.
Seal the individual parts or equipment separately in packages appropriate
for ethylene oxide gas sterilization according to your hospital's protocol.
2.
Sterilize the packages following the recommended ethylene oxide gas
exposure parameters as described in Section 6.6, "Ethylene oxide gas
sterilization" and the sterilizer manufacturer's instructions.
3.
Aerate the components following the minimum aeration parameters
specified in Section 6.6, "Ethylene oxide gas sterilization".
4.
Store the components following the instructions given in Chapter 9, "Storage
and Disposal".
